The Immigrant – is about a family who migrates to New Zealand from Sri Lanka for a better life. The film shows their troubles as they adapt and settle down in this new country. First problem they have is that Jagath (Paustin Sayon) who was an engineer back home cannot get the same type of employment. He resolves to odd jobs to pay for the daily expenses. The real shock comes when he realizes that this income is not enough to pay for his son’s college education. When he gets rejected once again he looks towards his friend Anurudha for help. Anurudha (Dharma Nissanka) owns a Taxi business and offers Jagath a chance to drive one of his Taxis. After joining Anurudha, Jagath finds enough money to send his son to college.

His problems are solved. He is disappointed that he did not get a job to his standard but he compromises and becomes happy. This is a story that is true to many immigrants from Sri Lanka who come abroad to the west with professional qualifications. That is the reason I was determined to make the film.
